[Bearbeiten] Introducing the International Graduate Program Medical Neurosciences
Medical Neurosciences [1] of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin focuses on translational research. The main objective is to bridge the gap between successes at the bench and – currently - less than satisfactory treatment at the bedside. Our rigorous and comprehensive teaching program provides a structured education in basic neuroscience to medical students and trains students of the life sciences in medical topics and approaches concerning the central and peripheral nervous system. Besides in depth theoretical training, the MSc program emphasizes practical lab experience, preparing graduates for continued research in the PhD program.
[Bearbeiten] Program at a Glance
The MSc program is divided into 5 modules and a research phase including the Master thesis. The 1st module is an intensive teaching block covering the neurobiology of the brain in health and disease from the molecular to the systems level. Module 2 encourages students to develop their individual research focus. In module 3, students are introduced to a number of relevant methods and techniques. Complementary skills like statistical data analysis and communication make up module 4. Students gain their first practical lab experience in module 5, the lab rotations. It is in the research phase that students combine the expertise gained in modules 1 to 5 and investigate a set of questions in great detail, perform experiments, analyze results and write a thesis.
During the 3-year PhD program, students primarily work on their research project in one of the participating labs. In addition to the lab work, they broaden their neuroscience expertise by taking classes and attending colloquia or lecture series . Once a year, PhD students organize an international PhD symposium. The PhD degree is awarded based on three publications or a dissertation.
[Bearbeiten] Focus on Research
Medical Neurosciences is very research driven. Since 2008 the program is an integral part of the Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure [2], a large scale research cluster funded by the German Excellence Initiative. In addition to Charité scientists, the program is carried by research laboratories of the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine [3], the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology [4] and the Max Plack Institute for Human Development [5]. Furthermore, the program has close ties to other neuroscience programs in Berlin such as the Berlin School of Mind and Brain [6], the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience’s graduate program [7], the International Helmholtz Research School Molecular Neurobiology [8] and various DFG-funded Research Training Groups (GRK).
Medical Neuroscience students thus have access to a large number of research laboratories in both basic as well as in clinical research, headed by internationally acknowledged scientists. They can choose from a very broad spectrum of research fields ranging from molecular neurobiology to cognition and neurodegenerative diseases and develop their individual focus accordingly.
[Bearbeiten] Career Options
The program prepares students for a career in science. Most Master-graduates continue for a doctoral degree, followed by a post-doctoral phase. For that, they either stay in Berlin or accept a PhD/post-doc position in Germany or abroad. Examples in case are leading research institutions like the Max Plack Institutes or reputable research universities like McGill or Stanford. Many of our medical graduates go back to the clinic and combine clinical work with research. A small number of students have left the path of science, though, and are now working as patent attorney specializing in life science or heading the international office of a medical school.
